2439 Fairfield, Shreveport’s best bed and breakfast

In my mind’s eye I’ve always had an unrealistic vision of what life must be like in The South. I’ve dreamt of long roads lined with cypress trees so burdened by huge clumps of Spanish moss that the branches hang down to the ground. These same roads always lead to sprawling plantations or quaint Victorian homes that looked like they belonged in a southern Civil War drama.

Alas, reality seldom bears any resemblance to our dreams. Occasionally, if we are lucky, we stumble on a place that reminds us that dreams can come true. 2439 Fairfield, a bed and breakfast in Shreveport Louisiana brought my Southern Comfort dreams to life.

Ten minutes from downtown, in one of the oldest residential neighborhoods in the city, 2439 Fairfield is a Victorian home lovingly restored and transformed into one of the best Bed and Breakfast experiences around. Surrounded by homes that would make any building in “Gone with the Wind” green with envy, visitors to 2439 Fairfield feel as though they are stepping back in time, to a far more civilized pace of life.

Nothing I write could prepare visitors for the moment they walk through the front door.  Every nook and cranny, every piece of wall is home to some knick knack or tchotchke.  To say that the home is overflowing with decorations is an understatements but, oddly, it never feels overwhelming. Instead, guests feel as though they are visiting a museum where collections of high-end china and antique porcelain are on display.

Jimmy and Brian also love to decorate for each season. My visit to 2439 Fairfield was during late fall and unfortunately I left before the Christmas decorations started going up. It’s a shame since I would have loved to see the B & B decked in the 50 plus boxes of ornaments that Jimmy told me was going up the next week.

Five guest rooms are available to choose from, each one named after an important woman in Jimmy’s life and each decorated in a unique and fantastical style.  Four of the rooms are located on the second floor with the fifth room, named Jaqueline, on the third floor.  Jacqueline is more of a small apartment than a hotel room, complete with two bedrooms, a sitting area and wet bar. It is the perfect room for two couples traveling together or one couple with children.

By far the best amenity at 2439 Fairfield is the breakfast. Without a doubt this is the best breakfast I’ve ever seen at a B & B, rivaling the selection and quality of many five star resorts I’ve had the pleasure of staying at. My suggestion for making the most of the experience is to get up early before breakfast is served and spend a few minutes chatting with the boys in the kitchen. It’s a great way to socialize and if guests pay attention they can come away with a couple of Jimmy’s recipes.

Fresh homemade jams, jellies and breads compliment breakfast staples such as baked ham, sausages, scrambled eggs, and hash brown casserole. Be sure to try my favorite, the pig candy: A thick strip of back bacon soaked in syrup and brown sugar then baked in the oven…it is pure taste bud heaven.

Another Southern tradition that was new to me was the concept of dessert at breakfast. Jimmy and Brian make this unconventional breakfast course a culinary delight with homemade fruit pies that come crispy and warm, fresh out of the oven.  If you are flying out of town early in the morning and think you’ll miss breakfast, think again: Jimmy will wrap up a slice of pie for you to take as a snack on the flight.

2439 Fairfield is a very special property that welcomes the GLBT traveler with open arms. From the moment that Jimmy and Brian welcome you to the moment that they hug you good bye, spending time at this inviting southern bed and breakfast is comfortable, relaxing, and leaves guests eager to return for more.

If You Go:

A significant portion of this review’s underlying trip was hosted by 2439 Fairfield and the Shreveport-Bossier Convention & Tourist Bureau. My opinions, however, are my own, and I was not paid to express any bias for or against this product or destination.
