The North American Travel Journalists Association (NATJA) today announced that Gay Travel Herald won GOLD, SILVER, and BRONZE in the Annual NATJA Awards Competition. The awards competition, now in its 21st year, honors the “best of the best” in travel writing, photography and promotion that cover all aspects of the travel industry worldwide.

NATJA bestowed a Gold Award on GTH’s photojournalism, “Spider web of Steel and Glass”, featured in the column Galleria Umberto I – Naples, Italy. Published in the second month of GTH’s launch, the article is a column in the series Picture Perfect which focuses the reader’s eye with amazing images of places, people, and experiences. The image shows the ceiling of a 19th century shopping arcade in Naples while gazing upwards at the breathtaking glass and steel dome, and was awarded the gold in the category of Photography – Facility, Architectural.

A Bronze Award was similarly bestowed in Photography – Landscape, Seascape to the Picture Perfect column The Moselle in Autumn which debuted a few months later in 2012. Additionally GTH Co-Editor and Creative Director Marc Kassouf received both a Gold and a Bronze award for his works in other publications. The category of Special Focus Travel Articles – Internet: Resorts yielded a Gold Award for his article Maroma by Orient Express surpasses expectations published in the trade journal TravelAge West. But the GTH award that topped them all was the Silver Award in the Travel Journalism Website category. Placing in between Gold Award recipient National Geographic Traveler Magazine and Bronze Award recipient Perceptive Travel, Gay Travel Herald was recognized amongst the best of the best. “To say we are thrilled is an understatement,” says GTH Editor in Chief Nathan DePetris. “When we entered the competition, especially in our first year of publication,” DePetris continued, “our hope was that GTH would be recognized with a Bronze Award or two for one of our articles… to receive the Silver Award for Travel Journalism Website is such an honor!”

The NATJA Awards recognize excellence in travel writing, photojournalism, social media, multimedia platforms, advertising, marketing and public relations for the travel and tourism industry. This year, NATJA received over 500 submissions from all over the world. “This year’s entries were outstanding, both in quality of the journalism, excellence and range of coverage,” said Helen Hernandez, CEO of the organization, noting that “Winners transported the reader through evocative storytelling and spell-binding photography.”

NATJA is the second largest travel media association in North America. Members include travel media professionals, convention and visitors bureaus, social media, hotels and attractions, and other travel marketing agencies. NATJA also publishes TravelWorld International Magazine.
