Greek Windmill, Santorini, Greece
A lone windmill stands silent sentry on Santorini, Greece. The island is unique for its geography, with the capital, Fira, built on a precipice of the volcanic caldera of ancient Thira. Little remains of the volcano, one of the largest eruptions in history that left the inside an open lagoon so deep several cruise ships can anchor in its protected waters. An ancient Minoan civilization once thrived in Akrotiri, leading many to speculate about the legend of Atlantis and its possible connection to Santorini’s volcanic explosion.
