Chichen Itza’s El Caracol

(c) GTH & Nathan DePetris

Built around 900 AD, El Caracol served as the ancient observatory for the Mayas at Chichen Itza on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The building is named El Caracol, or snail, after the spiral staircase that leads to the top observation area; from there ancient astronomers commanded a 360 degree view of the night sky atop the forest’s canopy.
